There are many ways to describe and understand the Feldenkrais Method®. In my view it is a learning process using touch, movement and perception to support human development and functioning. Both touch and movement are fundamental to us as human beings and are the means by which we begin to develop a sense of self as babies and also learn all our later skills. This process continues throughout our lives and our innate curiosity and capacity for learning enable us to refine our sense of self and improve our movement skills and abilities indefinitely.
The way we learn to move is unique to each of us and strongly influenced by our personal circumstances and preferences. Along the way we develop habits of being, moving, and holding ourselves. During Feldenkrais lessons, either in group classes or individual lessons, we learn to become more aware of our habits and observe if they still suit our present circumstances or if we need to modify them to find more comfortable and sustainable options.
